Ive had the good fortune to have had the ongoing opportunity to work directly with a Old Order Amish craftsman. I met him in a small northern Minnesota town back in July 2009. We talked about his lifestyle and that of his family, wife and seven children. He mentioned that he did woodworking, nearby, on his small rented farmstead. I asked if he had the means to plane out some old growth lumber which I was extracting from a old building which I owned? Yes, he was permitted to run a diesel engine (outside his farm building) which was attached by a long 20 foot pulley belt which in turn ran a large wood planner. He said that Id be welcome to visit him at his farmstead and so a week or so later, I did. Since that initial meeting Ive been back and forth to his farmstead a total of five different times. With no phone the only way to talk with him is in person. On my second visit, with my van loaded down with plenty of old growth wood planks(95 years old), I met Stephen Oesch out running down the road in his black buggy, horse drawn and with his wife at his side. Although he was over a mile from his farmstead, heading outbound, he obliged me by turning around and heading back to the farm. His seven children were there waiting and watching wondering why Ma and Pa turned around and were abruptly headed back home? We planned many a plank of old growth wood that morning.
