Hi guys, I am 19 years old, I’d like to give a little background about myself. I recently ended my first business after 4 years. When I was 15, I started making skids and shipping crates for the machine shop my dad worked for. The business was actually going very good, then unfortunately the machine shop got bought out, and the new owners felt it was a "conflict of interest" to have my provide them with the crates. After 3.5 long years, suddenly it was all over. Ever since, I’ve been struggling as to where my place is. Business has always been a passion of mine, a long with wood working. I have been thinking of moving into something a bit more artistic, such as custom furniture, hope chests, etc. My aunt and uncle actually make a very good living doing this. They build during the winter, and during the summer they sell all of their product. They mostly make chairs, and other household knick-knacks, the types of things the Amish make.
As stated, I’d really like to get into a bit more artistic stuff. I’ve always wanted to explore wood worker deeper then just boxes, and I’m thinking of taking the chance and trying to make a living out of wood working again. I am pretty afraid because of what happened with my previous business, but I’ve grown a bit and will have a much better approach this time around. I’m already much better off because I won’t be relying on one client; I plan to make whatever my heart desires, and sell it on ebay, craigslist, local craft shows, etc.
Sorry for the long rant! Now, to the question, is there anyone on here who does this for a living? Makes a living off of doing what they love. I’d love to be able to enter my shop in the morning, sit down, and come with a game plane of what I’d like to make. I know it’s not that easy, but I also believe that you can do anything you set your mind to. If I can make quality merchandise, I feel I won’t have much trouble selling it. Especially if I can create a name for myself in my area. I live among many Amish, this type of trade is pretty popular here.
Thanks to all who offer up advice and give me some insight as to what you do!
