toxicity in new furniture?
2 weeks ago we bought a bedroom set at The Room Place. Its chemical smell is killing me. I´ve left the windows open all this time but it won´t fade away. It makes me want to throw up. I´m thinking that the chemicals they used r toxic. It must have been made in China or something like that. I guess I will have to save more and go Amish. It´s sad that they sell us garbage.
Do u have an idea what kind of quemical this is? Is it as toxic as i think it is? Has this ever happenned to u? Thank you.

Your not alone in this, I install modular office furniture systems. Some the office chairs we deliver have made people sick for a short period of time. Some company’s require us to let these chairs air for 48 hours in our warehouse before delivering. Next time try letting the furniture air in the garage or outside for a day or two.
The chemical that you are breathing is a result of "off gassing."
This happens when manufacturers utilize plywood or formica that emits VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and can be extremely hazardous to your health. Formaldehyde is one of the many chemicals that could be emitted and is a known carcinogen.
This also happens with upholstered furniture.
You could choose to let it air out, as the other reply suggests.
You could also choose to purchase cleaner, greener furniture in the future. Real wood furnishings from manufacturers that obtain their materials from sustained forests and use non toxic glues and fabrics is a viable option.
